India accounts for 2.4% of the world's total surface area and 17.7% of the world’s population. The country has diverse agro climatic areas extending from the Himalayan peaks in the North, through the arid and semi-arid central region, to tropical rain forests in the south and a lengthy coastline of 7,517 km, harbouring globally significant terrestrial and marine biodiversity; Nearly 700 million rural people directly depend upon climate-sensitive sectors (agriculture, forests and fisheries) and natural resources for their sustenance and livelihoods. The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) has been operating in India for more than 20 years on strengthening the capacities of local communities in delivering the mutually beneficial conservation and socioeconomic outcomes, particularly involving vulnerable and marginalized groups.

The OP-7 of the GEF Small Grants Programme in India (SGP India), aims to enable communities and organizations in some of the most vulnerable and least developed areas, by enhancing their socio-ecological resilience. The approach focuses on collective action through participatory landscape planning and integrated management approaches, to promote innovative livelihood options, thereby producing local and global environmental benefits.

SGP India, OP 7 is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is the National Host Institution (NHI) for coordinating and facilitating SGP in India.

The design of the OP7 is focused on three regions in the country: (a) highlands of the North East, (b) Central semi-arid region of India and (c) Indian coastal regions. It fosters synergies with some of the key complementary government programmes and other initiatives through interaction on multi-stakeholder governance platforms, development of participatory landscape strategies, delivery of capacity building through learning-by-doing approaches and co-financing arrangements on community projects.

समुदायों के लिए वैश्विक पर्यावरणीय लाभ उत्पन्न करने के उपायों के रूप में स्थायी जीविका को बढ़ावा देना तथा उन्हें बनाए रखने के लिए ज्ञान और क्षमता प्रेरित करना एसजीपी की पद्धति में शामिल रहा है। वर्ष 1997 से, चिन्हित संगठनों के लिए 11.6 मिलियन यूएसडी की अनुदान राशि जारी की गई है। भारत में एसजीपी के आरंभिक फेज के माध्यम से 433 प्रोजेक्ट्स को सहायता दी गई, जिससे अब तक 1 मिलियन से भी अधिक लोग लाभान्वित हो चुके हैं। अभी तक 4000 से अधिक महिला स्वयं सहायता समूहों का गठन कर उन्हें सुदृढ़ बनाया गया है। साथ ही 110,000 हेक्टेयर भूमि को भी स्थायी भूमि और संसाधन प्रबंधन विधियों के अंतर्गत लाया गया है। ऊर्जा कुशल विधियों के माध्यम से 85,000 मीट्रिक टन से भी अधिक की C02 उत्सर्जन में कमी की जा सकी है। 18 से अधिक दुर्लभ प्रजातियों और संकटग्रस्त प्रजातियों को केंद्रित संरक्षण विधियों के अंतर्गत लाया गया है, और जैव विविधता पर आधारित 246 से अधिक जीविका संबंधी उत्पादों का एनजीओ और सीबीओ द्वारा विपणन संभव हुआ है। इसके अलावा लगभग 40 उत्पादों को एफएसएसएआई प्रमाणन दिया गया है।
